ILO is the NDIS answer to a reasonable complaint: that shared supported accommodation gives you a room in someone else's arrangement, and not everyone wants that.
Instead of funding a roster in a shared house, ILO funds a living arrangement built around one person, with the supports assembled to match.
How it is structured
ILO comes in two stages. The first is Exploration and Design, which is funded separately and is genuinely a piece of work: mapping what you want, who is already in your life, what support could come from family, friends or a housemate, and what has to be paid for. It produces a plan.
The second stage funds the arrangement itself, usually as a package rather than an hourly roster. That might be living with a housemate who provides some support in exchange for reduced rent, living alone with drop-in support, or a co-residency arrangement with a host.
Who it suits
People who have a clear sense of how they want to live, and often people for whom a group home has already been tried and has not worked. It asks more of you and the people around you at the design stage, and it gives more control in return.
Where we fit
We deliver the supports inside an ILO arrangement rather than acting as the design provider. If you have ILO funding and need drop-in support, personal care or nursing in Western Sydney, that is exactly the sort of work we do. If you are at the exploration stage, you need a provider set up for that specific piece of work, and we can recommend one.
Questions
What is the difference between ILO and SIL?
SIL funds a support roster in a shared home, usually with two to five residents. ILO funds a living arrangement designed around one person, which might involve a housemate, a host, or living alone with drop-in support. ILO gives more control and asks more planning of you.
Does ILO include rent?
No. ILO funds the supports in the arrangement. You pay rent and living costs from your own income, as in any home.
Can I move from SIL to ILO?
Yes, and people do, usually at a plan review. It needs evidence that the arrangement would work and generally an Exploration and Design stage first.
Do you provide ILO design?
No. We deliver supports within an ILO arrangement. Exploration and Design is a distinct piece of work and you want a provider set up for it.
Is ILO cheaper than SIL?
Sometimes, because informal support does some of the work. It is not the reason to choose it. The reason is that the arrangement suits you better.
