The parks near Glendenning built for all abilities, the wheelchair swing, what each one has, and what to check before you go.

Blacktown City has more parkland than most Sydney councils, but only a few parks were designed so that someone using a wheelchair, a walker or a hoist can use the whole space. These are the ones that were, all close to the Glendenning home.

What is at Nurragingy Reserve?

Nurragingy Reserve on Knox Road, Doonside, is about two kilometres from Glendenning. It has formal gardens, lakes, a Chinese garden, walking paths, barbecue and picnic areas, a water play area in summer, and car and bus parking inside the reserve. It is open all year.

The part built for all abilities is the Wawai Ngurra inclusive adventure playspace, which opened in February 2023 and is the largest playspace Council manages. Council lists an 85 metre elevated walkway that lets everyone reach a platform 3.5 metres up, all access swings and slides, a trampoline, a sand table, musical items, quiet places set back from the noise, a play sculpture, shaded play under mature eucalypts, a water refill station, several accessible parking spaces and a Changing Places facility. Variety NSW, which helped fund it, also lists communication boards for people who do not speak, braille symbols and a tactile wayfinding map.

What we have not verified: exact opening hours of the Changing Places facility and whether it needs a key. Ring Council on 02 9839 6000 before a first visit.

What is at Livvi's Place Elara?

Livvi's Place Elara is on the corner of Elara Boulevard and Northbourne Drive, Marsden Park, about five and a half kilometres from Glendenning. It is a large fenced playground built for all abilities. WheelEasy, which sends volunteers to check venues in person, lists easy terrain, easy access to the play area, accessible parking in two car parks (one between the playground and the basketball courts, one near the toilet block and sports field) and an ambulant accessible toilet in the block just outside the playground.

Stockland, which built it, lists a shaded water playground with jets, shaded seating, a flying fox, a merry go round, musical instruments, talking tubes, a spinning chair, a mound slide, a spinning disc, in ground trampolines, a sway fun, hammocks and a big swing. Note the toilet: ambulant means grab rails and a wider door, not a full wheelchair turning circle, and there is no adult change facility. The closest Changing Places is at Westpoint Blacktown.

Is there a swing you can use from a wheelchair?

Yes. Nurragingy Reserve has a Liberty Swing, the only one listed in Blacktown City and one of two in Western Sydney (the other is at Lake Parramatta). A Liberty Swing is a large platform swing that a person rides in their own wheelchair, strapped in, inside a fenced enclosure. It is locked and opens with the same MLAK key as the 24 hour Changing Places toilets, so get the key before you go. Our Changing Places guide explains how.

What is at Bungarribee Park?

Bungarribee Park is part of the Western Sydney Parklands, run by the NSW Government, with its entrance on the corner of Doonside Road and Holbeche Road, next to Sydney Zoo and about four kilometres from Glendenning. It is the biggest park in the area: a regional playground with a 14 metre climbing tower, slides, a 50 metre flying fox, swings and a water play area, plus 18 picnic shelters, 26 free electric barbecues, and two large car parks (Runway and Greenbelt), each with toilets that include an accessible toilet.

What we have not verified: whether the play equipment itself is designed for wheelchair users, and there is no adult change facility listed. The nearest Changing Places is at Wawai Ngurra, five minutes away. The play tower closes from time to time for maintenance, so check the Parklands page before a visit built around it. We will add path surfaces and the distance from each car park after a visit.

What does "all abilities" mean for a playground?

In NSW it usually means the playground was designed to the state's Everyone Can Play guideline, published by the Department of Planning in 2019 and updated in 2023. The guideline asks three questions of every playspace: can I get there, can I play, and can I stay? Getting there covers accessible parking, a continuous sealed path from the car to the equipment, and public transport. Playing covers equipment that can be used from a wheelchair or by someone who cannot climb, sensory play, and quiet areas. Staying covers shade, seating, toilets, drinking water and fencing. The NSW Government has funded 141 playspaces to the guideline since 2018. When a council says a park is "inclusive", ask which of the three it delivers on. A ramp to a platform is not the same as a toilet you can use.

Are there other all-abilities playgrounds in Blacktown City?

Council has upgraded Bill Colbourne Reserve in Doonside with an inclusive play space for mixed ages and abilities, and lists other park upgrades under its Everyone Can Play work. We have not checked those in person or against a detailed source yet, so they are not in the table. We will add each one after a visit.

Whatever the park, check three practical things before leaving. Weather: none of these playgrounds has full shade, and on a hot day the equipment and the rubber softfall get too hot to touch by late morning. Distance from the car: at Nurragingy the playspace has its own accessible parking; at Bungarribee, ask which of the two car parks is closer to the playground. Toilets: only Wawai Ngurra has an adult change facility, so if that matters, it decides the park.
