Shopping centres, supermarkets and cinemas are loud, bright and unpredictable, which is the point of a quiet hour: the same place, with the volume turned down. Here are the ones near Blacktown that publish times, plus a few places that are simply quiet.

When is quiet time at Westfield Mt Druitt?

Every Tuesday from 10.30am to 11.30am. Westfield says lighting is dimmed, music volume is adjusted and day to day activity in the centre is reduced. Sensory headphones are available to anyone who finds the environment overwhelming, at any time, not just during Quiet Time. All Westfield centres run the same Tuesday slot, so it also applies at Westfield Penrith and Parramatta. Not every shop takes part. If one store matters, ring it.

The rest of what Westfield Mt Druitt publishes is worth knowing too. The concierge desk (Ground Level near Rebel, 02 9625 7177) lends sensory headphones and manual wheelchairs and power shoppers free of charge; the mobility equipment runs out, so book it by phone the day before. Accessible parking is near the Coles, Food Court and Woolworths entrances, and every set of restrooms has a wheelchair accessible toilet, with the closest ones behind Novo Shoes, behind Foot Locker, at centre court near Travelex and beside Service NSW.

When is Coles Quiet Hour?

Coles runs Quiet Hour Monday to Friday from 10.30am to 11.30am in most supermarkets. The radio is off, register and scanner volume is at the lowest setting, there are no PA announcements except in an emergency, and extra team members are on the floor to help. Coles says most stores nationally take part. We have not confirmed each local store individually, so for a first visit check the store page or ring ahead. Woolworths runs a similar scheme; check your local store.

Does Westpoint Blacktown have a quiet hour?

We could not find a published quiet hour for Westpoint on the centre's website at the time of checking. What Westpoint does have is two Changing Places toilets, on Level 1 and Level 3. If you know of a quiet hour there, tell us and we will add it.

Is there a sensory-friendly cinema near Blacktown?

HOYTS lists sensory friendly screenings at both local cinemas: HOYTS Blacktown, on Level 4 at Westpoint (02 9003 3810), and HOYTS Mt Druitt at Westfield, 49 Carlisle Avenue (02 9003 3880). HOYTS says it hosts a sensory screening one Saturday morning each month at every HOYTS cinema, with the lights dimmed rather than off, the volume softened, and people free to move around. The film and the date change month to month, so check the cinema page or ring for the next one. To book a wheelchair space online, pick the wheelchair symbol on the seating map, then the seat beside it for a companion.

What is the Sunflower lanyard and where do I get one?

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a green lanyard with yellow sunflowers. Wearing it tells trained staff that you have a disability they cannot see, such as autism, anxiety, dementia or chronic pain, and that you may need more time, plainer instructions or a quieter space. Nobody asks what the disability is.

Around Blacktown it is recognised by Sydney Trains, NSW TrainLink, Sydney Metro and some bus companies, by Westfield centres including Mt Druitt, and by Sydney Zoo. Transport for NSW says station staff who see it will allow extra boarding time, help you through the station, support you during a disruption and find a quiet space where one exists.

The lanyard is free. Transport for NSW posts one to any NSW address, one per person: email sunflower@transport.nsw.gov.au with your name and postal address. Or pick one up from the customer service attendants at Blacktown, Parramatta or Penrith station, or from the concierge desk at Westfield Mt Druitt. It is worth having one in the bag even if it stays there most days.

Is Sydney Zoo manageable for someone who gets overwhelmed?

Often, yes, because it is outdoors and spread out, and there are no loud indoor shows. Sydney Zoo does not run sensory sessions, but it is a Sunflower member, lends noise cancelling headphones free with a $50 refundable deposit at the information desk, and runs an Accessible Zookeeper for a Day program, a half day small group experience with a dedicated guide where a support person can come along. Where are the quiet places?

Max Webber Library, Blacktown. Library members can book a study room free for up to two hours a day. Individual rooms take one to three people, and noise is kept to a minimum. It is a calm, air conditioned place to be on a hot day.

Wawai Ngurra playspace, Nurragingy Reserve. Built with quiet places set back from the play equipment, under trees. Good for a break during a park visit. See our parks guide.

Nurragingy's gardens. The Chinese garden and the walking paths around the lakes are quiet on weekday mornings.

Other libraries. Blacktown City Libraries also runs Our Library at the Mount Druitt Hub in Dawson Mall, closer to Glendenning than Max Webber, and the Dennis Johnson Library at Stanhope Gardens next to the leisure centre. We have not checked the quiet room arrangements at either branch; ring the library service on 02 9839 6000 before relying on one.

Timing beats venue. Any of the shopping centres is quieter between 9am and 10.30am on a weekday than during a Saturday quiet hour that does not exist. School holidays and the weeks before Christmas are the exception; if those matter, plan around the Tuesday Quiet Time instead.
